Genmaicha: A Classic Japanese Tea

Genmaicha is a rich, savory tea made from green tea leaves mixed with brown rice. There are several tales about its origins–which date as far back as the 15th century–but it has widely been considered a green tea for the common people. Mixing tea leaves with brown rice was a method that allowed for the eaves to stretch farther during challenging economic times, which also made it accessible to a wider group of working class people.


 

The rice was steamed, dried, then roasted (which “popped” the rice) and finally blended with sencha leaves. The result was a nutty, nutrient-dense tea that people drank throughout the day both in the home and in the fields, alongside meals. Genmaicha is still produced and served in this manner, honoring its origins. The Nagatani Tea Factory that produces the Organic Genmaicha we carry has upheld the traditional art of tea growing for over 100 years. Based just outside of Kyoto and family-operated, Nagatani teas are cultivated using Japanese organic practices to produce the highest quality green tea leaves, resulting in mineral-rich and delicious teas.

 

 

Intentional or not, the addition of brown rice to sencha leaves produces a tea that has unparalleled health benefits. High in antioxidants and non-soluble fiber, genmaicha helps balance blood sugar levels and aids in digestion, which is why it’s consumed before, during, and after meals. Because genmaicha soothes the stomach, it was a popular choice of tea for fasting monks! Traditionally, this tea is served hot, but we love to cold brew it in bigger batches to drink throughout the day. Here’s how to do it:

Ingredients:

  • 25g of Organic Genmaicha
  • 25 fl oz of cold, filtered water

Method:

Combine tea and water and place in the fridge for 5 hours. Our friend Yuta from Nagatani recommends this Japanese cold brewer–and honestly, we love it so much we use one at home!
